Zener Diode (IEEE)
Layout symbol
Diode that conducts backwards at a specific voltage, its Zener voltage (e.g. 5.1 V), and holds that voltage steady. Connect it in reverse, with the cathode (the bar) toward positive and a series resistor to limit the current. Used as a simple voltage reference or to protect inputs from over-voltage. Forward, it works like a normal diode. Learn more about diodes
