Diode

Schematic symbol

Lets current flow in only one direction, from anode to cathode (the side with the bar, marked by a stripe on the real part). Used to protect against reversed power, to turn AC into DC, and across relay coils and motors to absorb voltage spikes. A standard silicon diode drops about 0.7 V when conducting.
