Transformer

Two coils on a shared core that change one AC voltage into another, higher or lower, depending on their turns ratio, while keeping the two sides electrically isolated. It only works with AC; for a DC supply, the output is followed by a rectifier and a smoothing capacitor. Mains transformers carry dangerous voltages on the primary side.
