Transformer (with middle tap)

Schematic symbol

Two coils on a shared core that change one AC voltage into another, higher or lower, depending on their turns ratio, while keeping the two sides electrically isolated. The secondary coil has a center tap, giving two equal voltages around the middle, used with two diodes as a full-wave rectifier or to make a ± split supply. Mains transformers carry dangerous voltages on the primary side.
