An IR LED and a phototransistor facing each other across a slot, so an object passing through the slot blocks the light. Used for end stops, position sensing and counting rotations with a slotted disc. The LED needs a series resistor, and the phototransistor needs a pull-up resistor on its collector to give a readable signal.
