LM386

Layout symbol

Small audio power amplifier chip that can drive an 8 Ω speaker directly, often from a 9 V battery. It runs on about 4–12 V with a built-in gain of 20, and a 10 µF capacitor between pins 1 and 8 raises the gain to 200. The output (pin 5) usually goes to the speaker through a large capacitor (e.g. 220 µF), with a potentiometer on the input for volume.
