An IR LED and a light sensor facing each other across a slot, with a built-in circuit that gives a clean digital output when something blocks the slot. Used for end stops, position sensing and counting rotations with a slotted disc. The LED still needs a series resistor, and some versions need a pull-up resistor on the output.
